Google Maps places phantom city near Las Vegas

advertisement

Overnight, a new key city --- oops! make that a Nevada ghost town --- surfaces near Las Vegas, according to Google Maps, and that is causing some red faces at Google, notes Grumpy Editor.

Rochester, Nev. appears on Google Maps between Las Vegas and Henderson, the state's second largest city.

Google Maps places Rochester on the 215 freeway, just west of Henderson, 15 miles southeast of Sin City.

Travelers relying on Google Maps for directions and information will find that Rochester has no restaurants or lodging. No streets, either.

That's because Rochester doesn't exist. Not in Nevada, at least. (But maybe in Twilight Zone.)

Other Rochesters continue to hum in New York and Minnesota, however.

Google Maps, in placing the latest Rochester in Nevada's Clark County, has county officials scratching their heads.

They wonder why no taxes have been flowing from that city.

A spokesperson says Google is working hard to fix the error which came out of nowhere and thus is a mystery, making it a true Western ghost town.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Actually there was such a place in Nevada....just not in the location that google gives... Rochester, NV. and a wiki rundown Rochester, NV.

It is a true western ghost town.

Maybe they were looking for Groom Lake. The Yacht Club is very popular.
